Giants tackle Niners to advance to Indy.

In what turned out to be a seesaw battle with the lead change 4 times and the game tied twice, it took the New York Giants 3 possessions in overtime to put the San Francisco 49ers season to rest.

An evenly matched game where both quarterbacks threw two touchdown passes, with the only difference being the field goal kicked by Lawrence Tynes after a Kyle Williams fumble in they’re third possession of overtime.

Williams the backup punt returner, in the game due to an injury to Ted Ginn Jr that made him unavailable for Sundays contest, fumbled once in regulation in addition to the overtime fumble. The Giants were able to capitalize on each, the first leading to an Eli Manning touchdown pass and the second to the field goal to win the game.

49ers quarterback Alex Smith only managed to complete one pass to an outside reciever all after noon, going 12 of 26 for 196 yards and two touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis. San Francisco’s Frank Gore led rushing attack accounted for 150 yards on 28 carries.

Eli Manning, sacked 6 times by the 49ers defense, managed to keep the game in hand with a 32/58 for 316 yard performance with two touchdowns. The Giants rushing game was limited to just 85 yards on 26 carries.

When put in must win situations at the end of this season the New York Giants have been able to pull out victory by even the slimmest of margins, and this game was no different. San Fransisco could just as easily be making the trip to Indy for the February 5th date with the New England Patriots. But thanks to some sloppy ball handling Eli Manning has an oppertunity to do what few quarterbacks have done by adding another championship ring to his resume.
